Location and Overview
Natural Bridges National Monument is located in southeastern Utah, showcasing three large natural sandstone bridges formed through the forces of water erosion. The monument preserves these geological wonders as well as Ancestral Puebloan dwellings, offering visitors a combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The Natural Bridges
The three bridges—Sipapu Bridge, Kachina Bridge, and Owachomo Bridge—are among the largest and oldest natural bridges in the world. Each bridge formed as a result of the slow erosion of sandstone by flowing water, creating impressive arches that span deep canyons.
Geology and Formation
The bridges were carved over thousands of years by the action of the Cedar Mesa Sandstone layer being cut through by creeks and rivers. This erosional process is distinct from that which forms arches, emphasizing the monument's unique geological history.
