White-throated Dipper Cinclus cinclus

A compact, slate-brown passerine with a conspicuous white throat and chest that forages underwater by diving and walking on stream bottoms. In Plitvice it is a reliable indicator of clean, fast-flowing streams and cascades, often seen bobbing on rocks near riffles.

Look for a chunky, robin-sized bird with a white throat and chest contrasting with a dark brownish body; behavior is diagnostic — bobbing on rocks and bold plunges into fast water to feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fish.
