Zion National Park Canyon and Rim Plants
What is this?
Ponderosa Pine Pinus ponderosa
A tall conifer with long needles and characteristic orange‑brown, puzzle‑like bark on mature trunks. Ponderosa forms the higher elevation forest patches and rim woodlands in Zion, where its deep roots and thick bark help it survive periodic drought and surface fires.
Long needles (10–20 cm) in bundles of 2–3, thick scaly orange to cinnamon bark in patches on mature trees, and large conical mature crowns.
Common Confusions
- Pinyon Pine Pinus edulis Ponderosa has much longer needles in bundles of 2–3 and tall straight trunks; pinyon is shorter with needles in pairs and a more rounded crown.
- Douglas‑fir Pseudotsuga menziesii Douglas‑fir needles are softer, arranged spirally with petiole‑like bases and cones with distinctive three‑pointed bracts; ponderosa needles are grouped in bundles.
