Petrified Forest National Park Fossils and Desert Plants
What is this?
Black-tailed Jackrabbit Lepus californicus
A large hare with long ears and a black-edged tail adapted to open desert and scrub; primarily crepuscular and feeds on grasses and shrubs. It is common on open flats and is a key prey species for park predators.
Note the very long ears, hind legs, and black-edged tail; when startled they run in a straight, fast line rather than zigzagging like some rabbits.
Common Confusions
- Cottontail Rabbit Sylvilagus spp. Cottontails are smaller, with shorter ears and a more compact body; jackrabbits are larger with long ears and powerful hind legs for bounding.
